Growing up in rural Appalachia, it was extremely difficult for me to get by. Two examples of what this means are food stamps, and poor housing.
My family used to tell my that I was a good person. “Use your brain, not your body,” Because so many people in my area had suffered injuries as a result of manual labor jobs.
I believed that everything would be ok when I was accepted to college.
After I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology, I realized that I had no prospects for a better future.
I went back in school.
After spending 12 years and $200,000 on my doctorate, I started working as a therapist in the medical field.
Through some hard negotiations, I eventually got my salary up to $93,000 a year—high for the therapy field, and more than anyone in my family had ever made.
It’s about $45 an hour.
I thought I was done. “made it.”
However, I was required to spend 40 hours per semaine dealing with bureaucratic red tape and navigating insurance hoops. It also meant having to deal incompetent bosses as well as following bullshit dress code such as wearing khakis (I hate khakis)
The worst? The worst part? “subclinical.” Because they feel better as soon as they feel well. “enough,” Their insurance company would no longer cover therapy.
I couldn’t help them to flourish or live a more satisfying life.
My steady income and job security made me feel trapped.
I was then invited to 2020 and received an email…
I would be fired in thirty days.
I was working remotely in Telehealth. However, my employer required everyone to return to the office due, you know, to the pandemic …).
My job was at risk because my position was completely remote and I’d already moved.
To earn $45/hour, I had 12 years of my adult lives to pay student loan debt and $200,000 in college loans.
This was the end of job security.
It was worse because I couldn’t find another job due to how backward therapy licensure works. It would have taken me 4-6 months to relicense in my state.
I could not wait for money to come in. But I didn’t know how to make it happen.
