Learn how to find, build and grow a film + photo rental studio.

By the age of 23, I’ve opened three studios in Los Angeles and have hosted over 1000 rentals.

What is the photo studio rental business?

Simply put: you lease a commercial property, creatively design it, and charge customers hourly to rent the space for photoshoots and video shoots. The most popular way of marketing photo studios is through a website called Peerspace. Think of it as Airbnb for film and photo locations. The film / photo rental studio business is a great way to make additional income, meet other creatives in your community, and also have a creative space to use for yourself whenever you want to.

How much will I make?

The reality is – your location, theme, and marketing efforts will all play a part in how much business you earn through rentals. It could be $0/mo, or in my case, an average of $6K/mo. Understand that all business comes with risk.Rule one: Keep your overhead LOW. I recommend rent no more than $1500/mo for your first studio.Rule two: Have a personal use for your studio OUTSIDE of just relying on rentals.Photography packages, music video deals, public/private events, etc are all great ways to utilize your space as an asset and create additional income streams.

Meet Your Educator,
Brandon Esparza

At the age of 20, I signed my first commercial lease for a 700 sq ft unit in downtown Los Angeles. Shortly after, at the age of 21, I expanded into my second studio – The Time Machine – a 3000 sq ft multi-set creative space. I started from scratch, self-funded, and had no idea what I was doing. I’ve learned so much by opening these two studios and am so excited to finally pass on that knowledge and help you in your journey.
