On top of that, YouTube today is more competitive than ever, and the competition starts on the homepage with thumbnails. It’s getting harder and harder to win the click.
It’s so frustrating to pour hours into making a video only for no one to watch it because you made a bad thumbnail. It can feel truly heartbreaking. You know your content is valuable, but it’s hard to keep going when no one is watching.
Of course, you can figure it out on your own (like I did). But you can save months, if not years of your YouTube journey, by knowing how to make a good thumbnail from day one.
And here’s the good news: You don’t need to be a graphic designer or a Photoshop wizard to make thumbnails that get results.

In 2021, I started my own YouTube channel while working as a management consultant, and it’s grown to 14,000 subscribers. My success led me to joining Ali Abdaal (6.1 million subscribers) as his Head of YouTube.
For 2.5 years, I ran the entire channel while it doubled from 3m to 6m subscribers, and generated millions in revenue. And even though I’m not artistic or creative, I ended up designing 100s of thumbnails for Ali.
I taught myself everything, and stuck to Canva because Photoshop felt intimidating. But during that time, I noticed a huge problem.
So many educational YouTubers were struggling with thumbnails (including me) and no one had made a comprehensive guide on how to go from complete beginner to expert. So here we are.
