While entrainment is considered global, meaning the frequency targeted will increase amplitude throughout the brain, it is possible to entrain each brain hemisphere independently. David Seiver and Michael Joyce have conducted extensive research on this topic. There are times when you would like to entrain two different frequencies simultaneously. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in the “awakened mind” pattern, characterized by low theta activity with bursts of gamma activity. A variation of this is also used in achieving the “in the zone” state, as well as promoting healthier sleep through the use of sleep spindles. Entrainment media presented at random frequencies can break stuck brainwave patterns and facilitate thinking outside the box. This form of entrainment appears to be akin to “white noise” for brainwaves, presenting all frequencies simultaneously. This has been proven to help shift brainwaves into healthier patterns.
